Maria Philippou’s residency ran from March 27th – April 2nd 2017.
Inhabiting our Facebook and Instagram accounts, her output focused on creating endurance performances.
Her biography spoke of her approach to producing and documenting; using the performer, the audience and the mirror as the focal point of the performances to explore and challenge identity. Using only even numbers of actors, directing them specifically, selecting costume and set she rigorously controls how spaces are inhabited.
She has recently also become interested in doppelgängers, puppets and ventriloquism and the idea of extending the body and the interplay between body and machinery. Developing performances that consist of dividing the actor and materials to autonomous conscious creatures she sees the participants role as similar to one of a child playing with action figures.
She used the residency as an opportunity to post preparatory rehearsals, live footage and videos of interventions in garages, gymnasiums, swimming pools and warehouses.
