Ellen Welsh’s residency ran from March 20th – March 26th 2017.
Inhabiting our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts, her output focused on consolidating ideas on how she uses her bedroom and online spaces to make-work.
Her biography spoke of how she is inspired by writing, whether it is poetry, diary entries or notes written on her devices. As an interdisciplinary artist she uses whichever medium fulfills her ideas, from drawing, print and installation. She is interested in memory, intimacy and nostalgia, particularly by creating an impression of her own ’little world’.
She is also interested in making zines, seeing them as a mode of expression, which can be privately confessional, easily accessed and introspective. Her work is sometimes concealed in envelopes for people to take and read later, or hidden in the inbox folder of a mobile phone.
She used the residency as a period of time to explore her own thoughts on where she makes, investigating what she needs and requires from a room, whether it is purely a desk or a separate space. She began by involving game software to articulate thoughts and ideas, and additional content such as scanned love letters to social media visitors.
