Bex Massey’s residency ran from May 1st – May 7th 2017.
Inhabiting our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr accounts, her output focused on her northern childhood nostalgia.
Her biography spoke of how she refashions paraphernalia appropriated from her adolescence in an awkward coupling of garish nostalgia and traditional making techniques. She explores the phenomena of celebrity, the throw away nature of British popular culture and the undercurrent of anxiety drifting just below the surface of daily life.
Her practice is split between Newcastle, South London and East London, with the commute inbetween proving rich time to work on her online diary/sketchbook.
She used the residency to develop work for her upcoming solo show at the arebyte LASER gallery. She created digital collages, paintings and photographs featuring images of Ant and Dec, pineapples and 1990’s Mr Motivator tracksuits. Often the images on Instagram are mosaicked, draping over several tiles to form one full images.
